The Scholars are a Alternative/rock quintet from Oxfordshire.

Formed in 2008 and after relentlessly writing in bedrooms and gigging in (initially very empty) venues found that people were enjoying what they were up to.

With faithful support back in their home town of Oxford and their student HQ in Birmingham, they love nothing more than to play shows – “its what its all about in our humble opinion.”

“Way back in October 2009 we put out our debut single called ‘Turbulence’ off our own back just as an experiment. It came as a complete surprise to everyone (and mostly ourselves) that it seemed to go down very well. We bided our time and followed it up by recording our first EP entitled ‘Arrival/Departure’ during a very cold January in 2011. Its available to buy at our shows, and will be on iTunes very soon. Thanks for looking, listening and being the fuel in our tank.”

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT ‘ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE’:

‘These tracks sound like big-budget, major-label produced, second album material, set for big-time MTV rotation and festival sing-along status, beyond the scale of what you’d expect from an unsigned bunch of local younsters; such grand ambition is admirable and audacious.’
-Nightshift Magazine

‘Full of sombre vocals, big haunting synthesisers and playful catchy melodies that will sound great on an indie dance floor’
-OMS Magazine

This is a group who are not only creating a sound that is so desperately from new music at the moment, they are doing it in a way that should allow them to gather admirers beyond those who already appreciate the genre and that is, perhaps, the key ingredient that is missing from many of the new bands trying to break the current dominance of dance & Urban music… a band that is unafraid to start out with such a powerful introduction surely has a bright future ahead.’
-Eclectically Challenged

an impressive introduction.. you won’t go far wrong by investing 11 minutes of your time into The Scholars’
-Chronic Ape, Birmingham

‘Delving into the dark and wonderful… do the right thing and go out to the record stores or live shows and buy this record for real’
-7/10, Oxford Music Blog

‘There is a lot going on here, rich backings, thick textures and very high production values throughout, and it feels similar to the way a slow-moving river carries more sediment, making it at the same time more powerful..’
-Music In Oxford

The Scholars have had widespread national and regional airplay, championed on such radio stations as BBC6 Music with Tom Robinson, BBC Oxford, NME, Kerrang, and even being Alex Zane’s ‘Track of the Week’ along the way leaving The Scholars to be a hot tip for 2011!

The band never fail to impress the critics with their ‘energetic and pitch perfect’ (Birmingham Live!) live shows that exhibit painstaking attention to detail and musicianship whilst still being ‘extremely powerful‘ (Nightshift Magazine) and the unexpectedly well received debut single ‘Turbulence’ which can be found on iTunes.
